A Pure Gift

Mrs. Rina Zinkin

The first word mentioned in this week’s parsha is “Va’etchanan”. One of Rashi’s interpretations of “Va’etchanan” is that it is one of the ten expressions which denote tefillah. Rav Pincus zt”l, in his sefer Sha’arim B’tefilah, elaborates on the uniqueness of this specific form of tefillah. This form of tefillah, employed by Moshe Rabeinu in this week’s parsha, expresses one’s realization that anything we ask for from Him is really undeserved. Any request that is fulfilled and granted to us is ultimately a “matnat chinam” – a free and undeserved gift from G-d. Even Moshe Rabeinu, as great and lofty as he was, realized this basic truth, and approached his request to enter Eretz Yisrael with this same posture – that of “matnat chinam”.

This is a very central and crucial theme in tefillah that we must constantly reinforce within ourselves. There is nothing that we truly deserve based on our own merit. All of the good fortune that we are blessed with in our life is not really “earned” or “expected”. It is a pure gift from G-d. Such an approach is the most proper and truthful way to daven and express ourselves to the Ribono Shel Olam.

As we approach Tu B’Av, a day of tefillah, we should merit strengthening ourselves in this specific approach to tefillah. Through this understanding, we should merit to deepen our relationship with Hashem, and ultimately help bring about the geula shelaimah, bim’heyra v’yameinu. Amen.

Good Shabbos,

Rina Zinkin
