  Seek it Out

Mrs. Fagie Reves

In this week's Parsha we read about the famous rebellion of Korach and his followers against Moshe. What is Korach's complaint exactly against Moshe? Korach says, "Rav Lachem Ki Kol HaEidah Kulam Kedoshim" - we are all holy, so why should Moshe and Aharon be the leaders when really anyone can be?

What Korach is referring to is G-d's proclamation before Har Sinai that Bnei Yisrael are a mamlechet Kohanim and goy kadosh. If so, Korach says: G-d told us we are all holy, not just one or two of us. We each have the opportunity to be the leader but instead, Moshe and Aharon take all the power for themselves. Rav Hirsch sees in Korach's argument the principal of democracy; Korach thinks that every individual can equally be the leader and so it should be put to a vote. The people should choose who should lead them and Korach assumes that when they go into the voting booth they will certainly vote out Moshe and Aharon. But Rav Hirsch says that Korach gets it wrong. What he doesn't realize is that individuals aren't naturally and equally holy; rather they are each given the same POTENTIAL to be holy. What each individual chooses to do with his potential is his own responsibility but he is given the building blocks to achieve greatness. It is only those that reach their full potential that G-d chooses and hence Moshe and Aharon were chosen. Korach thinks everyone is equal, but he doesn't understand that to achieve the holiness G-d blesses everyone with takes work. It isn't just an injection that G-d gives everyone that transforms them instantly. This is an important lesson to take away from the story of Korach.  We are all given the basic building blocks to elevate our spiritual status, to come closer to G-d but it is only those who make the choice and effort to do so who will be rewarded for it. You cannot just sit back and expect holiness to come to you; you must seek it out and make the effort. Only in that way, can we even hope to come close to reaching the level of Moshe.

Shabbat Shalom
