This Week at Midreshet

By Abbie Denemark and Georgia Levine

We began our week on Motzei Shabbat with Yom Yerushalayim festivities, marching together from Yeshivat Mercaz Harav to the Kotel with other seminary and yeshiva students, as well as hundreds of Israelis. It was an amazing experience as we walked through the streets of Yerushalayim, halting traffic whilst being beeped along by the police escort.

It was a long walk but was definitely worth it!  We finally entered the old city, with the recording of the IDF liberating Har HaBayit echoing in our ears.  As we neared the Kotel, everyone began running towards it, the boys immediately forming a celebratory circle…impressively enthusiastic for 2am!!! Many brave students remained in the old city until tefillat Vatikin and returned to Midreshet later Sunday morning for a well needed sleep.

Later that day, we made our way to the center for the Rikud Degalim, Yerushalayim's flag waving parade, made memorable by the chaotic crush of thousands of dancing girls and boys (separate, of course!).  After dancing in the street in the center of town, we began our musical march to the Kotel…no simple feat considering that the crowd numbered around 30,000 people who all wanted a first row seat at the Kotel!

All in all, it was a day we will never forget!

On Monday afternoon we all took part in Masa's end of the year event. Rona Ramon (wife of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon z"l) shared her fascinating personal story with us and we were also inspired by 3 top Israeli athletes, Yael Arad, Tal Brody and Karen Leibowitz.

Wednesday night was the culmination of a lot of hard work on the part of our rakazot and us girls as we celebrated a bridal shower for a former Gush Katif resident, Linoi Khalili. Money was raised through the Gush Katiif Kallot Fund by hosting and participating in a Zumba night, Purim auction and other various endeavors. It was heartwarming to see how appreciative Linoi, her family and her soon-to-be chatan were, as they shared stories of the traumatic   disengagement from Gush Katif. The mood was lightened with dancing, singing, hugs for the kalla…and yummy baked foods of course! (Courtesy of Elianna Kaufman, Sharon Cohen, Stephanie Leichtung and Abbie Denemark). It was truly a night to remember!

Girls are preparing to give shiurim to all their friends on Shavuot. The final stages of the preparations are ones of relief and of pride…the girls even learned how to (semi) master the Bar Ilan Responsa Project!

Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming Shabbat Babayit which will lead into Shavuot and which we will be sharing with many of our favorite teachers!

We hope all you readers have a Shabbat shalom and a Chag Same'ach!!! J

Lift Your Heads

Mrs. Lauren Goldschmidt

It says in the beginning of this week's parsha, parashat BaMidbar, that Hashem commanded Moshe Rabbeinu to take a census of all of Klal Yisrael. When describing how to count the Jewish people, Hashem uses the phrase "Si'u et rosh kol adat Bnei Yisrael". This is a very interesting way to phrase this point. One would have thought that Hashem would just say: 'Count Bnei Yisrael', but here we see that Hashem uses this specific phrase which means "Raise the heads of all Bnei Yisrael". So what are we supposed to learn from the usage of this phrase?

The purpose of the count was to elevate each individual in Klal Yisrael. That is why the word si'u is used here. By counting each individual of Bnei Yisrael, Hashem wants to show that every single person has their own tafkid, their own purpose, their own significance within the klal.

This is also a reason why we read Parshat Bamidbar right before Chag Ha'Shavuot. We know that we are leading up to Matan Torah. So, before we receive the Torah, Hashem wants each and every one of us to feel that not only do we have our own unique contribution to the klal, but we also have our own individual path in serving Hashem. Every single one us has so much potential, all we have to do is just "lift our heads" and believe it.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and a Chag Sameach!!!
