Begin Again Today

by Bracha Krohn

I would like to share with you something I read by Rav Hirsch about the mitzvah of "Terumat haDeshen" that we learn about in this week's parsha, Tzav...

Each morning, the kohanim would have the job of sweeping off the ashes from the mizbe'ach left over from the korbanot that were offered the day before and which continued burning on the mizbe'ach through the night. This was a job that the kohanim raced up the ramp to get to first!  They even wore the special bigdei kehuna to do this, even though one could understand if they had seen it as a lowly task, not really part of the avodah, really just "taking the garbage out."  Instead, their behavior shows us that EVERY job in the mishkan or Beit haMikdash that was in any way connected to avodat Hashem was important, and an honor to be a part of...  (The same applies nowadays whenever we help clean up a shul or Beit Midrash, putting sefarim and chairs back in place, getting rid of the "ashes" from yesterday...)

Rav Hirsch says that the symbolism here is that every Jew starts the day by "erasing"/clearing out the day before.  No matter how great you were yesterday, today is new.  We start all over again.  And I think we can look at it the other way too -- no matter how you messed up yesterday, today is new!  We clear out the old, and now in with the new.

Great way to live, right?  If we did great, we stay humble and never assume we don't have more to do or accomplish or improve; and if we failed or sinned, well then here we go again!  Another day to try to do better.

So although I hope you have only good days, with even better and better ones to follow, just in case a day doesn't go the way you want -- remember each morning to clear away the ashes from the day before and then start your new day of avodah :)

Shabbat Shalom
