This Week at Midreshet

This week's highlight was most definitely the tiyul down south to Eilat!!!!! Early Tuesday morning, 2 buses left Midreshet with our students ready to explore the Land of Israel....We headed down south joined by Midreshet staff Ruthie Gershinksy, Evyatar Katz, Michal Porath Zibman, Rav Eitan Mayer and Leora (and baby Ruchama) Bednarsh.

Our first stop was Sde Boker where we ate breakfast. After breakfast, we visited the grave of Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion and his wife Paula. Our tour guide, Jamie (married to Midmo alum Cindy Nathanson!), explained to us the unusual setting of their graves and then we got back on the buses and went on to hike Nachal Chavarim. There the students were introduced to some Midmo traditions- Evyatars famous tiyul coffee, sliding down the mountain together, and making the word 'MIDMO' on the mountain out of rocks. Along the tiyul Rav Eitan spoke about the significance of being in Eretz Yisrael and the prayer for water. Michal spoke about appreciating the silence of being in the desert, and using that time to think. We then hiked the next portion of the tiyul in silence where we could just listen to the beauty of nature around us and immerse ourselves in our own thoughts. It was a beautiful morning/afternoon and a great start to our 3 day journey together.

After lunch, we set out for Mitzpe Ramon and learnt about the magnificent crater as we snacked on the famous Israeli 'Crembo'. The next morning the group divided into 2 groups. Many of our girls chose the option of the very challenging, very rigorous, hike up Har Shlomo, while many others chose the....less intense option of a beautiful hike through Ein Netafim. Shana Bet spent the day with Eim Bayit Sarah Proops and little Ashi, snorkeling and hanging out at the separate beach in Eilat.

That night we all regrouped for a scenic and fun boat ride with great music and the girls sang and danced together. The boat ride is always truly the best way to end the long yet
wonderful great day of hiking! Today is the final day of the tiyul and the girls have a choice between an intense hike or water sports....stay tuned, we'll let you know next week how many chose the hike!!!!!

Swimming Against the Tide

Ze'ev Orenstein

We are living in a time when the very right of the Jewish people to a sovereign Jewish state throughout the Land of Israel is openly challenged – amongst a majority of the global community, as well as an increasing percentage of the Jewish people.

But majorities are not always right, and the fact that the sane running of a democratic society calls for the minority to accept the mandate of the majority, still does not mean that the mandate is blessed with truth.

Let us never fear being a minority. We, the Jewish people, are the minority par example, and have survived it with honor. Let us not be terrified or intimidated by the thought of being alone, the one person in the crowd who disagrees, the one who is convinced of her position and who cries out her opposition. It is not easy to stand alone against the crowd. In many cases, in doing so, one invites derision, threats, defamation and loneliness. It is so much easier to drift with the tide rather than swim against it. People are happier that way; they have fewer problems.

That is not the way of man; that is certainly not the way of a Jew. If the Jewish people had accepted the premise that the majority must be right, they would long since have disappeared from the stage of history. If the Jewish people had capitulated before the power and prestige of kings and the church, the Jewish people would have long ago ceased to exist. If they had been intimidated by numbers and reputation they would not have been the children of Abraham that the Jewish people are.

They called our father, Avraham Ha'ivri – Abraham the Hebrew. The word Ivri, Hebrew, comes from the word eyver, meaning side. The whole world stood on one side and Avraham on the other. The whole world said that theirs was the way and Avraham dissented. The whole world threatened to cast Avraham into the original Auschwitz – into the fires of Ur Kasdim – should he not recant his belief in the one, true G-d.  In the end, he was right and all others wrong. In the end, he was proven right only because he had the courage to endure the loneliness of standing for that which was true and just, even when it meant standing alone.

We are his children.

To dissent is not easy, but no great revolution has ever taken place in Jewish history that was not begun and concluded by those willing to risk that loneliness and the storm of hatred and attack that we leveled at them.

“You alone are right?” people will challenge. If you believe so, shout it proudly, “Yes, I am right, and I will fight for the day when you too, understand.”

Why would one choose to endure such hardship, one may ask?

Simply, because she loves the Jewish people and the Jewish people need her, and because someone must do what has to be done and say what needs to be said.

During these trying times, when the very right of Jewish people to the Land of Israel is being challenged from within and from without, let us follow in the footsteps of our father, Avraham, possessing the courage to stand proudly and defiantly – even if it means standing alone, and stating to our detractors that this is our homeland – by right – and that we are here to stay.

Shabbat Shalom.
