This Week at Midreshet

With a full week of learning, the girls really got a great taste for all our classes this week. Last Thursday night was our first Mishmar with Michal entitled: "Elul, Expectations, Eternity, and Eretz Yisrael". It was in the zchus for a Refuah Shleima for our alumni Meira Bresler Riemer and in honor of her Aliyah.

On Monday we had a huge book sale in the Beit MIdrash featuring the famous bookseller, Manny, of "Mannys Sefarim" store from Mea Shearim, and the girls bought and ordered books for their classes.   That night our truly amazing madrichot, Hannah, Rivki and Avichayil organized a fun filled activity decorating cupcakes (and eating them!) that was enjoyed by everyone.

Our Pre-Rosh Hashanah Lunch Shiurim also began this week. Every day, during the lunch break, a 20 minute shiur is given by one of our faculty and anyone interested can come participate.

All in all, it was a great week of learning!

Shabbat Shalom.

Stand Tall, Stand Proud

Michal Porath-Zibman

This weeks double Parsha of Nitzavim VaYelech opens up with the declaration of 'Atem nitzavim hayom kulchem... rosheichem, shivteichem....etc.'  You are standing firmly together today before your G-d… the heads of your tribes...to your water drawers...'

The Midrash Tanchuma explains why Moshe began with the words 'Nitzavim'-you are standing. Why did the Torah need to stress that they were standing? The Midrash says that after the difficult words of the previous Parsha, Ki Tavo, which was full of possible very painful scenarios that would happen to the Jewish people (the curses that were given to them on Har Eival), that it is possible that we   would become very depressed after reading the Parsha. Perhaps after hearing about all the difficult things that might happen to Bnei Yisrael, there are those that would feel that it's hopeless, that we should just give up because things can potentially get very hard. In order to encourage us to continue the path of Avodat Hashem, of standing proud and confident as a nation, Moshe tells the people- Atem Nitzavim!!! Despite everything that happens to you, you are still standing strong together before G-d, and He will continue to bless you in the future just as He did in the past.

The last Lubavitcher Rebbe adds a question to this pasuk- why was there the need to say 'kulchem', all of you, and then go into detail of the various positions; Rosheichem, Shivteichem, etc.  Doesn't the word kulchem, all of you, include these various positions?

He answers that it is important that a Jewish person always sees himself in 2 different realms. On the one hand, being together as one, as a unified united nation of Am Yisrael, and yet, not to forget that each one of us has our own task, our own destiny, and our own mission to fulfill. That is why Moshe addresses us this way. It is to remind us that we need to strive continuously for a level of achdut, of unison, as a nation, but never to neglect to carve out our individual destinies.

Yehi ratzon, as we approach this Rosh HaShanah, that Hashem should bless us to connect with both the idea that the midrash suggests that we never give up, that we continue to strive, and combined with the Rebbes words, that we should always strive as a nation, yet know that our success as a nation is also the result of each one of us fulfilling our individual mission. And IYH, if we are able to achieve both levels of the Yachid and the Yachad, then Am Yisrael will be inscribed with the sweetest New Year.

Shabbat Shalom.
