On the Big Stage

For many, the period between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur represents a challenging time – a time full of stress and worry – after all, we’re being judged.

However, I believe that there is another way to approach this time of year.

Among the more popular shows on TV over the last few years have been shows such as American Idol, The X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

What is it about these shows that make them so popular?

I don’t believe that it’s simply a desire to watch musical / artistic performances, because if that’s all it’s about, then one could just watch MTV or VH-1, and likely find a higher quality product than anything one sees on American Idol, The X-Factor or Britain’s Got Talent.  

I believe that what makes these shows so compelling and perhaps even inspiring to some, is that one is watching relatively unknown performers take to the stage in packed halls, being viewed by tens of millions of people on TV – and then watching these performers being judged on their performances.

Who will make it to the next round, and who will be ridiculed?

Who will rise from unknown to celebrity status, and who will simply go home?

I believe that what makes these shows so compelling is the opportunity to watch someone like Susan Boyle, a very simple and modest looking woman from Scotland, who before her appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, was someone who most people would likely not have paid much attention to – only to witness, once she took the stage, that everyone had totally misjudged her; that she was in fact, once given an opportunity, quite a remarkable woman, with tremendous talent and ability – one who has since that moment a few years ago, been able to inspire countless people throughout the world.

I believe that perhaps the reason for much of the stress during this time of year comes from our only having a one-sided perspective of what it means to be judged.

Yes, it is true that during this period we must take ownership for our actions of the past year and make changes where necessary.

However, as hundreds of millions of the viewers of shows such as Britain’s Got Talent can attest to, there is also something exhilarating about being judged while appearing on the big stage. It provides one with the opportunity to rise to new heights – to be our best – to become the person that deep down inside we know that we can be but that for whatever reasons, have never allowed ourselves to become.      

Let us all strive during this period, between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, to embrace our opportunity to be judged – not by someone like Simon Cowell or Paula Abdul, but by the ultimate Judge of the most Supreme Court – the One who truly knows who we are and who we have the potential to be, if only we will believe in ourselves and in our G-d given talents enough to make it happen.
