This Week at Midreshet

It has been a really busy week, starting on Sunday night with our pre-Pesach Seder where the girls shared divrei Torah and songs.  On Tuesday morning Midreshet Moriah set out to assist the JNF in tree pruning! We learnt that thousands of people every year plant trees in Israel, yet there is a lot of work that is required in maintaining the trees themselves. One of the steps that must be done to care for the trees is pruning them. After spending a morning in one of the JNF forests right outside Yerushalayim, we are proud to have pruned almost a hundred trees that day!

Wednesday night a Matzah baking crew came to Midreshet to teach the girls how to bake Matzot for Pesach. The girls mixed the flour and water according to the accurate ratio that makes it halachically acceptable to be eaten over Pesach and after kneading the dough, they baked the Matzot. Afterwards the girls had an opportunity to ask Halachic questions on Matzah baking. Rabbi Lerner, Malka and Fagie gave great shiurim while the Matzot were baking.

Wishing everybody a great Shabbat!

Parshat Tazria

Renewing our Spirit

Mrs. Rina Zinkin

This Shabbos we read Parashat HaChodesh. In Shemos Perek 12, psukim 1-2, the Torah tells us, “Hashem said to Moshe and Aharon in the land of Mitzrayim saying: ‘This month (of Nissan) shall be for you the beginning of the months, it shall be for you the first of the months of the year.” Although the New Year begins with Tishrei, celebrating the creation of the individual, the months of the year are numbered from Nissan, celebrating the creation of the Jewish nation.

The mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh was the first mitzvah we received as a nation. Rashi (Shemos 12;2) points out that the word “chodesh” (month) shares the same root as the word “chadash” (new). Hashem told Moshe and Aharon: “When you see the moon in its new phase, it shall be the beginning of the month for you.”  We can imply from this that with the arrival of the new month comes the opportunity for a new start. When the new month comes, one should be imbued with a spirit of renewal.

Why was this mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh given to us specifically in Mitzrayim? The word Mitzrayim can be connected to the words “metzar,” a narrow constricted place and “meitzarim,” boundaries, limits. Rav Dessler, zt”l, in Michtav MeEliyahu (chelek 2, pp. 17-18) explains that Mitzrayim was called by that name because it was a place of spiritual constriction. It was devoid of spirituality and was a place where evil was rampant. The impurity and evil of the country was personified by the king’s name, “Paroah”, from the root word “parua,” to reveal. Evil was revealed in Mitzrayim. It was known that workers who entered Mitzrayim never left; it was a place where one got stuck physically and spiritually. The Egyptian mentality was “you will be whatever you are now.” So, Hashem gave us the Mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh- of renewal- specifically in Mitzrayim, to show us that Judaism, which encourages renewal, is the antithesis of Egyptian ideology.

If we look at the root of the word “Nissan,” we find “nes.” “Nes” can also be defined as a banner which is raised up high. In chodesh Nissan, we were raised from slavery to freedom. Another name for the month of Nissan is “Chodesh Ha’aviv.” Hashem arranged that we would travel during Chodesh Ha-aviv, springtime, not only because it is easier to travel during this season, but because during the spring, one can see nature budding and blossoming. The world is alive. Just as atmosphere is conducive to physical growth, it is conducive to growth spiritually.

As we read Parshat Hachodesh this week and welcome the month of  Nissan, may we be infused with a true sense of “hitchadshut” (renewal)  and raise ourselves to greater spiritual heights. May we be zocheh to free ourselves from our bondage- from any spiritual “meitzarim” (constraints), and achieve true cheirut (freedom) to serve Hashem in a more sincere and passionate way!
