Drums and Flags

It has been another great week at Midreshet Moriah! This past Sunday night we had a fun activity in the dorm with our fantastic Madrichot. We baked cookies and projected the movie Space Jam on the common room wall. We’re going to miss them so much when we leave.

On Tuesday night we all gathered together in the Beis to daven a Tefillah Chagigit in honor of Yom Yerushalyim. Afterwards, we had a ‘drum circle’.  We set up a circle of chairs in the center of the Beis and everyone was given a darbuka. Our two instructors, Ehud and Ilan, together with all of us, played their drums and sang songs celebrating Yerushalyim.  We were taught how to play different types of beats on the drums, and we also played a drum version of ‘simon says’. Whoever hit the drum when they weren't supposed to, had to have a picture taken of them with two shofarot held on their head – it was hysterical (guess you had to be there…). The whole night was so much fun! Later on, some girls walked to the Kotel led by the boys of Yeshivat Mercaz ha Rav. They sang with hundreds of others and davened vatikin at the Kotel.

On Wednesday, we took part in the ‘rikud degalim’ (dance of the flags) parade in honor of Yom Yerushalaim as well as the other various celebrations taking place throughout the city.  The rikud degalim began at gan saker where we all gathered with our Israeli flags. At around five o'clock, everybody began to dance and sing as we made our way to the kotel while waving our flags high. Everyone danced together in circles; Midreshet girls and Israeli girls combined.  It was truly amazing being able to celebrate this day in Yerushalyim itself!

Shavuot is just around the corner and we are busy preparing shiurim for our all night learning. Stay tuned and in the meantime, have a great Shabbat!
